Relocating to Plovdiv as an expat

Are you looking for an exciting and culture-filled city to relocate to? Then Bulgaria’s second-largest city, Plovdiv, is the right place for you! The city was elected as European Capital of Culture in 2019 and is filled with thrilling possibilities – whether you’re looking for higher education or job opportunities, Plovdiv has it all.

Background information

Historically known as Philippopolis, Plovdiv is situated in the Thracian valley, which is rich and saturated in nature and cultural ancestry and has a population of nearly 350 000 people. It is referred to as the economic capital of Bulgaria since it contributes to as much as 7.5% of Bulgaria’s GDP. Transport is well-developed, with many buses and shuttles, as well as a fairly well-developed cycling infrastructure. Furthermore, three of the Pan-European corridors run through or near the city, making travelling to Bucharest or Istanbul very easy by car. For farther destinations, Plovdiv Airport is less than 30 min away from the city centre. Surrounding it are two breathtaking mountains – the Rhodopes and Vitosha, as well as Maritsa river, which is the fourth largest river in Bulgaria.

Expat Opportunities

Many foreign companies in the IT sector, such as Cisco, Adastra and SB Tech have offices there and are actively hiring internationals. They, along with companies from other sectors like services, manufacturing and agriculture, provide lots of jobs for expatriates. For students, there are two universities – Plovdiv University “Paisii Hilendarski” and Plovdiv Medical University, offering good quality education to many internationals. That being said, there are lots of young and modern people, who are open-minded and always ready to help.

Leisure

When it comes to entertainment, Plovdiv hosts numerous cultural events throughout the whole year, such as the International Fair, The Golden Chest TV festival, Kapana (“The Trap”) Fest, and Opera Open night. In addition, the city is built around seven syenite hills, some of which reach up to 250 meters height and offer astonishing panoramic views of the city. That’s where its nickname “The City of The Seven Hills” comes from. Furthermore, there are many historical monuments and ruins, such as the Roman theatre and the archaeological complex Eirene, as well as the beautiful and colourful preserved old town, with houses dating back to 4000BC, situated right next to the city centre. For the party people, there is a large assortment of bars, clubs and pubs, catering to all different tastes.

Rental market

As many new properties are being built, the housing supply is stable. However, there is a large demand, so finding a place to buy/rent might not be that easy. The rental prices range anywhere from 180€ outside of the city centre to 250€ in the city centre per month for a one-bedroom apartment. If you wish to have an apartment with more bedrooms, the prices may go up to 400-500€/month (for a three-bedroom apartment in the city centre). The prices per square meter range anywhere between 700-1100€, depending on location, which is fairly cheap compared to other countries like Germany, where prices are approximately 5 times higher. The best neighbourhoods to live in are the city centre, Maritsa Gardens, Trakia and Southern Industrial Zone.

Important Expat Information

Bulgaria is situated in the heart of the Balkan Peninsula and offers a very diverse and breathtaking landscape, as well as a cheap standard of life, making it perfect for expats from all over the world. To the north you can find the 2850 km long Danube river and vast lowlands, while the mountains and elevated plains are in the south. In the east, there is the Black Sea coast, with many touristic cities and party resorts. Furthermore, Bulgaria is one of the oldest countries in Europe, founded in the distant year of 681, making it very rich in cultural and archaeological ancestries. However, the downside is that not everybody speaks English, so knowing at least a little bit of Bulgarian will surely come in handy.
